Julep Maven Unboxing August 2014

Better late than never, right?  I realize it is the middle of September and I am now just getting my August Maven box up on the blog.  To be fair I had a new niece born and I was the maid of honor for my best friend’s wedding in August, both of which kept me away from home on mini “vacations”……but I promise to do much better from here on out!  And that means not too long from now I will have September’s unboxing posted for you.

Here is my Julep Maven Unboxing for August 2014:

{along with my Julep customer service experience}

Julep Maven Unboxing August 2014

Julep Maven Unboxing August 2014

The theme for this month’s box was based around the new Wanderlust Collection.

For August, I decided to add-on three additional products to my Maven box.  Which meant I was supposed to get a freebie as well.  Here in lies how I ended up having an experience with the customer service department.

Julep Maven Unboxing August 2014

When I opened my Maven box, I found a little note saying “You aren’t dreaming…you’ve earned a beauty freebie this month” however there was no freebie to be found.  At first I wasn’t going to call.  I told myself it was just a freebie and that I am glad I ordered the add-ons anyways.  However, I went to go use the Plie Wand, one of the add-ons I purchased, and it immediately broke.  At this point, I knew a phone call to Julep was necessary.

Julep Maven Unboxing August 2014

I had read horror stories online and complaints posted all over Julep’s Facebook page at how upset people were with their customer service department.  This is part of the reason why I initially hesitated calling in.  I love my Julep polish and had, up until this point, had a great shopping experience with the company {yes, I am one of those that buys product in addition to my monthly subscription items each month}.  So, I didn’t want to tarnish things because of a customer service call on a freebie item.  But, given that something I actually paid for was defective, I felt I had to put on my big girl panties and call them.

To top it off, I was attempting to call on a Saturday afternoon literally one hour before their customer service department was to close.  I didn’t have high hopes going into the call, but let me tell you this:  My call into Julep’s customer service department was literally one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had.

Now granted, I wasn’t one of those calling in to cancel my subscription immediately after receiving my free box, but I would like to think that any customer calling in would be treated the same regardless of why they are calling.

I explained to the nice lady over the phone what had happened.  She put me on hold as she needed to find out what freebie I was supposed to have received.  I was only on hold for a minute or two when she came back on the line to tell me the freebie {which was to be their eye shadow primer} was on its way and that replacement heads for my Plie Wand were also on their way to my door.

I had those puppies within a few days.

However, here in lies the reason for my second customer service experience with Julep.  The freebie arrived damaged.  It was no fault of Julep’s, though.  The box literally got smashed somewhere along the line during transport.  I have had plenty of shipments from Julep, all of which were fine.  It literally looked like this teeny, tiny box was set under a shipment of bowling balls.

But, I couldn’t even open the eye primer {I tried thinking that if I could get to the product, the damaged bottle didn’t bother me}.  However, I could not even get it open.  I snapped a picture of it on my phone and sent an email to Julep.  I had a response within one business day and a replacement within a few days again {of a freebie, let me remind you}.

You know, I am a small business owner myself, so maybe I am a bit more understanding of issues that arise that are completely out of the control of the company itself.  But I feel like Julep could not have handled my inquiries any better.  So, I cannot be one of those that proclaim their customer service department to be lacking.  In fact, I am saying the opposite of all the terrible things I have been reading online.

Julep responded quickly, had replacement products shipped immediately, and were extremely friendly in all of their responses.  I give their customer service department a big thumbs up!

Whew!

Now onto what I actually got for the month of August in my Maven subscription box!

Julep Maven Unboxing August 2014

You already know that I scored a freebie item which was their Blank Canvas Mattifying Eye Primer and that I ordered the Plie Wand as an add-on.

The three regularly included Maven items included two polishes, called Neha and Tazeen, along with Julep’s Gel Eye Glider in Smoky Plum.  The other two add-ons, in addition to the Plie Wand, that I ordered were the 3-pack of nail masks and another polish called Blakely.

From left to right: Tazeen, Neha, and Blakely.

Can we please just take one moment to marvel at that gorgeous pink color {the Neha}.  If you do not already own this, get your hands on it fast!

The Products I am most Excited to Try:

If I am being honest with you, even though it has been over a month since I got the replacement pieces, I still haven’t tried the Plie Wand and I am DYING to do so.  With all the traveling I did this past month, I just threw polishes in my bags and went.  I am hoping to test out this tool soon, though, as I have read such good reviews on it and how it makes applying polish a breeze.

Julep Maven Unboxing August 2014

Otherwise, I have actually tried all the other products already!  The Gel Eye Glider is amazing.  Even though it is called “Smoky Plum”, it doesn’t come across as overly purple and I have been using it on my lower waterline rather than using an alternative black waterproof liner as I feel it gives me a softer smoky eye look.  I have been really impressed with the quality of Julep’s makeup line!

And I am so glad that I was as persistent as I was in getting that freebie Blank Canvas Mattifying Eye Primer.  In one word, it is amazing {I really need to find a new word to use other than amazing}.  Not only does it mattify my eyelids, it covers the discoloration I have from all of the veins.  It provides the most perfect blank canvas for my eye shadow {so Julep named this eye primer appropriately} and my shadow doesn’t budge or crease throughout the day.  The only tip I have is to make sure it is dry before you apply your shadow otherwise the primer product can get onto your shadow brush, which means it can then touch the shadow still in the pan, and you could damage your eye shadow.

The Neha nail polish I gushed about above is as good on the nails as it appears in the box as well!

What exactly is a Julep Maven Subscription?

Julep Maven is a monthly nail polish and beauty subscription box. They make all their own products, so subscribers get a good value each month – over $40 retail worth of product for just $24.99 a month.  Plus, as I mentioned above, each month they offer big discounts on select items and special packages that you can add on to your box.

And, if you sign up for 3-months up front, you get a $19.99 per month rate instead!

Each month Julep releases a new collection on the 20th.  This is the date each month that you can decide which box you want, you can upgrade to the entire collection, or you can skip that month {you earn a skip every 6 months you are a subscriber}.

The Julep Maven subscription box is the perfect way to treat yourself to new nail color and beauty products each month.  I have been a Julep Maven for a few months {I am a Classic with a Twist Maven} and so far absolutely LOVE the products.  The nail polish is some of the best that I have ever used.

I LOVE Julep. I actually just finished a manicure with Mahima. I’ve tried everything from gel to wraps and I can’t break my weekly Julep manicure addiction. The Freedom topcoat makes my manicure flawless; people swear I’ve been to the salon. Getting my box each month is so exciting, and I love that you can trade out items if the ones picked for you just aren’t your thing. I’ve never dealt with customer service, but I’m glad your experience went well!

I subscribe to a lot of monthly beauty boxes and the part I love most about the Julep subscription (that is different from the rest) is that you can pick and choose what you get rather than just try and use whatever product is included in the box for the month. I never feel like I have wasted my money because I am always getting something I know I will use!

Trust me, it was worth calling in to get it replaced. I love it! I haven’t had any issue with my shadow creasing when I use it and I love that it provides a nice blank canvas for my shadow (it hides all my purple veins).

I think my daughter would absolutely love a subscription…I probably would too…but she would really love it. And if I got a subscription for myself, everything would disappear, because that is the way teenagers seem to work. They “borrow” and seldom return. I enjoyed reading about it…I really didn’t know much about Julep prior to this.

Smoky plump sounds geourgeous and I love the nail polish colors too. I think I would have loved this box! About the customer service, your experience sounds very good. It might be that they have taken the feedback seriously and done something to improve the service. At least I hope so, a company that takes customer feedback seriously gets big plus in my eyes.
